How can the gas be stored?
Once upon a time...
Almost two hundred years ago many places in the UK began to produce town gas from coal. Large storage tanks, often called gasometers, were built to store gas.
Natural gas replaced town gas in the 1970s, and gasometers are no longer needed.
Rock recycle
Natural gas comes from rocks under the sea or land. One brilliant idea is to use these rocks to store gas once they are empty - this is exactly what happens a few miles off the East Yorkshire coast.
Gas is pumped down into the rocks to be stored, and then brought out again when it is needed.
